Karmenu Vella is the current European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, holding this position since 2014.
Before holding this post, he was the Minister for Public Work of Malta between 1981 and 1984, Minister of Industry from 1984 to 1987, and Minister for Tourism between 1996 and 1998. He again held the position of Minister of Tourism from March of 2013 until November of 2014, when he was nominated as EU Commissioner Designate. During his Parliamentary term in opposition, he served as both Shadow Minister for Tourism as well as Shadow Minister for Finance. He has also held a number of positions in the private sector in the transport, tourism, construction, and industrial sectors.
He graduated in Architecture and Civil Engineering from the University of Malta and obtained his Master of Science in Tourism Management from Sheffield Hallam University.
